Abstract: The advent of intelligent vehicles that can automate their movement as well as communicate with each other and infrastructure provides a range of new options to address key urban traffic issues e.g. congestion, safety, and GHG emissions. Using a network of intelligent intersections in a highly congested urban street network, a novel real-time distributed and dynamic end-to-end routing system for fully Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) is proposed. The performance of the proposed model is compared to dynamic one-time shortest path routing in downtown Toronto, using an in-house agent-based traffic simulation. Results show that the proposed system is capable of increasing throughput while reducing the average travel time by 40%. The importance of connectivity when it comes to the applications of automated vehicles (AVs) has been demonstrated. Moreover, in this study the impacts of the proposed distributed routing with different market penetration rates (MPRs) of CAVs and congestion levels have been investigated. The results further show that the higher the MPRs—especially in the case of highly congested urban networks—higher the average speed, lower mean travel time, and increased throughput.
