讲座题目:What is the Next Industrial Revolution?

主讲人:MengChu Zhou, Ph.D. & Distinguished Professor

Fellow of IEEE, IFAC, AAAS and CAA

The Helen and John C. Hartmann Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

New Jersey Institute of Technology

摘要Human beings have experienced two major industrial revolutions. The first one took place in the 19th century, which replaced muscle power from humans and animals with mechanical power. The second one started in the middle 20th century, which provided people and societies with Internet. It was built with the technologies from computing, communication, networking and information storage. Both offered unprecedented productivity increases. What will be the next one? This talk intends to answer this question by presenting some recent development of Internet of Things (IoT) and smart systems. IoT was selected by IEEE as a major initiative to develop and advance over the next few years. Several recent studies have predicted the huge growth of IoT and tremendous benefits to the world economy. It was expected that 26 billion IoT units would be installed by year 2020, generating $300 billion in revenue. The IoT will generate an additional $1.9 trillion in economic value. We plan to present a system engineering approach to Internet-of-Things-based smart systems and their applications to smart manufacturing, smart cities, smart gird, smart medical and healthcare services.

讲座题目:Greening the Edges

主讲人:Nirwan Ansari, IEEE Fellow

摘要:A variety of bandwidth-hungry applications and services such as high-definition television, video streaming, and social networking are being deployed rapidly, thus leading to a continuous surge in bandwidth demand across networking infrastructure, notably the access portion (last-hop access). Thus, both wireline and wireless telecommunications operators are driven to upgrade their access networks to provide broader bandwidth for their subscribers. Upgrading the provisioning capacity of access networks inevitably leads to a dramatic increase of energy consumption. Moreover, owing to the direct impact of greenhouse gases on the earth environment and the climate change, the energy consumption is becoming an environmental and thus social and economic issue. Therefore, it is important to design and build energy efficient high capacity access networks. This talk will highlight the roadmap in designing energy efficient access networks, cover the state of the art on greening wire and wireless access networks including renewal energy powered networks, and provide a discussion alluding to the 5G development.

Biography: Nirwan Ansari is Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). He has also been a visiting (chair) professor at several universities.

Professor Ansari recently authored Green Mobile Networks: A Networking Perspective (IEEE-Wiley, 2017) with T. Han, and co-authored two other books. He has also (co-)authored more than 500 technical publications, over 200 published in widely cited journals/magazines. He has guest-edited a number of special issues covering various emerging topics in communications and networking. He has served on the editorial/advisory board of over ten journals including as a Senior Technical Editor of IEEE Communications Magazine. His current research focuses on green communications and networking, cloud computing, and various aspects of broadband networks.

Professor Ansari was elected to serve in the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Board of Governors as a member-at-large, has chaired some ComSoc technical and steering committees, has been serving in many committees such as the IEEE Fellow Committee, and has been actively organizing numerous IEEE International Conferences/Symposia/Workshops. He has frequently been delivering keynote addresses, distinguished lectures, tutorials, and invited talks. Some of his recognitions include IEEE Fellow, several Excellence in Teaching Awards, a few best paper awards, the NCE Excellence in Research Award, the ComSoc AHSN TC Technical Recognition Award, the IEEE TCGCC Distinguished Technical Achievement Recognition Award, the NJ Inventors Hall of Fame Inventor of the Year Award, the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award, Purdue University Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer Award, and designation as a COMSOC Distinguished Lecturer. He has also been granted 36 U.S. patents.

He received a Ph.D. from Purdue University---West Lafayette, IN, an MSEE from the University of Michigan---Ann Arbor, MI, and a BSEE (summa cum laude with a perfect GPA) from NJIT---Newark, NJ.
