讲座简介:The talk provides an overview of recent work on the analysis of network entropy, which leads to new methods for network algorithms in both the machine learning and complex network domains. We commence by presenting simple approximations for the Von Neumann entropy of both directed and undirected networks in terms of edge degree statistics. In the machine learning domain, this leads to new description length methods for learning generative models of network-structure, and new ways of computing information theoretic graph kernels. In the complex network domain, it provides a means of analyzing the time evolution of networks, and making links with the thermodynamics of network evolution. We take this analysis one-step further by showing how the concept of a partition function from statistical mechanics can be extended to networks, and how the Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac spin-statistics of particles in thermal equilibrium with a network immersed in a heat bath lead to new forms for the entropy, capable of capturing non-classical aspects of network structure. Experiments are provided on network time series elicited from financial markets and networks representing brain activation patterns in fMRI images of Alzheimer's patients.
